The Doomsday Clock: El reloj del juicio final
Pentagram ha actualizado la imagen del reloj Doomsday, el símbolo gráfico que representa la proximidad de la aniquilación nuclear del mundo. El reloj es el emblema del Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, el grupo en defensa del planeta formado en 1945 por científicos del Proyecto Manhattan.
El nuevo diseño, elaborado por Michael Bierut y Armin Vit, coincide con el grupo la decisión de mover el reloj hacia adelante de siete a cinco minutos antes de la medianoche metafórica o del juicio final, ante una guerra nuclear. El avance refleja la creciente disponibilidad de las armas nucleares y los efectos del cambio climático. El Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists anunció en 2007 que el reloj avanzó dos minutos.
Diseño Anterior del reloj
El reloj símbolo fue diseñado en 1947 por el artista Martyl, que estaba casada con un físico que trabajó en el desarrollo de la bomba atómica. En los años transcurridos desde entonces, ha sido utilizado por el Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, como un recordatorio del peligro nuclear.
La hora más cercana a la medianoche fue de dos minutos, en 1953, después que los EE.UU. y la Unión Soviética hicieran pruebas con bombas de hidrógeno, el que más lejano a estado ha sido 17 minutos, en 1991, después de los EE.UU. y la Unión Soviética firmaron la reducción de las armas estratégicas. El reloj había avanzado la última vez en 2002, después del 11-9, hasta el año pasado que ha vuelto a avanzar.
También se diseñó una campaña de comunicación que coloca el reloj sobre las imágenes de la guerra contemporánea.
